Shoalhaven Action Campaign fully supports Nowra CBD redevelopment and River Front Development.

With the recent comments made about how bad the Nowra CBD looks, Ross Thompson Ward 1 candidate and Mayoral candidate John Fergusson wants to make it abundantly clear where Shoalhaven Action stands on the Nowra CBD and riverfront. In a comment today Shoalhaven Ward 1 Candidate and President of the Shoalhaven Action Campaign Ross Thompson fully supports the redevelopment of the Nowra CBD and the riverfront development.

“We need to proactively pursue the redevelopment and revitalization of Nowra.  It is the true gateway to the Shoalhaven and it needs to have a draw card of its own and that is the riverfront. At the moment Nowra is not a destination it is just a Pitt Stop for tourists.”  Responding to comments made recently attacking Council for how the CBD looks and the overall feel of the CBD.

“We need to revitalize the CBD and riverfront area by putting into place the Nowra CBD Master plan and not just talking about it. Building owners and Investors need to take some responsibility here but if the rest of the CBD that is Junction Court and other eyesores are run down why would they.”

As a Ward 1 Candidate for council Ross Thompson has commented “If I am elected John Fergusson and I will work very hard to put into action the Nowra CBD Master plan. We need to get on with it and stop just talking about it. In saying this I call on both Gareth Ward & Shelly Hancock to get the State government to confirm where the alignment of the third river crossing will be as this is holding up putting the Master plan into action.

Cr Fergusson calls to refer the determination of the new LEP back to full meetings of Council

Cr Fergusson calls to refer the determination of the new LEP back to full meetings of Council.

Shoalhaven Action Mayoral candidate, Cr Fergusson has voiced concerns about the decision of Council on a motion of Cr Watson to delegate the decision process on these new LEP matter to the Special Development Committee. This decision is the subject of a Rescission Motion, supported by Cr Fergusson, at next Tuesdays Council Meeting to refer the determination of the new LEP back to full meetings of Council.

Cr. Fergusson said that “no other Committee or Board of Council has delegated authority and it is a failure of responsibility and accountability to do so with these critical issues and they should not be buried in some obscure Committee process.

This is the most important Strategic document that Council will deal with for the next 25years and it is essential that it be considered carefully, comprehensively and by full Council. The process, argument and voting should be exposed to the full light of a full Council determination.  Full Council has to accept the responsibility of the final document and the community would expect all it’s elected officers to deal with it”

Fergusson aims for mayor

Independent Councillor John Fergusson as mayoral candidate will lead a team of strong candidates dedicated to changing the culture in Shoalhaven Council. President of Shoalhaven Action Campaign, Ross Thompson, announced today that Shoalhaven Action Campaign will run candidates in all wards and the group has chosen independent minded people who will push to have more community involvement in council decision making. “Shoalhaven Action Campaign will promote accountability, transparency and integrity in council decision making and will push for more efficient and effective outcomes for the long term social, economic and environmental well being of the Shoalhaven.”

Cr Fergusson commented: “as council should be made up of true independent candidates I have put my name forward to challenge for mayor. I believe that over the last few years, council has become too party political and local government should not be used as a launching pad for political careers or a retirement home for spent political careers..”

Candidates who will be supported by Shoalhaven Action Campaign include local business people Michelle Miran, Ross Thompson and John Levett. The group will soon be announcing their vision for the Shoalhaven and specific policy initiatives in each ward. One obvious issue is the declining state of infrastructure, particularly roads and how available money can be more effectively spent. Poor job growth, youth unemployment and the lack of public transport are others. SAC will launch their campaign next month with fundraisers in all three wards. In the meantime Ross Thompson will be engaging the community and asking for support from people who share the groups concern with the direction of council. All are invited to visit the website shoalaction.org.au to find out how they can become involved.
